Back pain myths

Myth 1: Intervertebral disc injuries require surgery and cannot heal on their own

Whilst some do require surgery, just like any injury, disc injuries can also heal. Interestingly, the more severe the disc injury the greater chance of it healing.

Myth 3: You should avoid flexion or bending forward after a disc injury

If you were to injure your elbow, would you prevent bending it for the rest of your life?

Hopefully not!

Spines are designed for movement. Avoiding certain movement generates further muscle spasm and compensation around the area. With the guidance of your physiotherapist, returning to ALL movement patterns (even under load), is essential!

Myth 3: You cannot lift heavy weights after a disc injury

Also untrue! In many cases it is highly beneficial (under the guidance of a physiotherapist) to return to lifting weights. Doing this with a physio ensures good technique to build a solid base of support.
