Experiencing shoulder clicking, pain with overhead activity, or weakness during lifting? You might have a SLAP tear or another type of labral injury. These conditions often go undiagnosed but can seriously affect your shoulder stability and performance.
What is a SLAP tear?
SLAP stands for “Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior”—a tear affecting the top part of the cartilage ring (labrum) in the shoulder joint. It commonly affects athletes who throw, lift overhead, or perform repetitive upper limb movements.
What causes SLAP tears?
Overhead sports (e.g. cricket, swimming, volleyball)
Heavy or awkward lifting
Falling onto an outstretched hand
Repetitive shoulder strain or previous dislocations
Symptoms of a SLAP tear:
Deep, aching shoulder pain
Clicking, popping, or locking
Weakness or loss of shoulder strength
Difficulty with overhead activities
Treatment approach:
Many SLAP tears can be treated non-surgically with physiotherapy.
For more complex tears, a shoulder surgeon may be involved, especially for younger athletes.
