Shoulder dislocations and joint instability are common injuries—especially among athletes, tradies, and those who’ve had a fall or direct impact. If your shoulder feels unstable, weak, or like it might “pop out” again, it’s time to take action. At Darwin Health Group, our physiotherapists specialise in helping you recover and regain long-term joint stability.
What is a shoulder dislocation?
A dislocation happens when the head of the upper arm bone (humerus) is forced out of the shoulder socket (glenoid). This typically results from trauma—like a sporting injury, car accident, or heavy fall. After the first dislocation, you may be more prone to future dislocations due to stretched ligaments and weakened stabilising muscles.
What is shoulder instability?
Shoulder instability occurs when the joint becomes loose and is prone to slipping out partially (subluxation) or fully (dislocation). It can be chronic, especially after multiple dislocations or due to naturally loose joints.
Common symptoms include:
A feeling of looseness or weakness in the shoulder
Pain with certain movements or positions
Repeated “slipping” of the joint
Decreased range of motion or power
How is it treated?
Early management includes rest, ice, and reducing inflammation after a dislocation.
A progressive strengthening program is crucial to rebuild muscle support around the shoulder.
In cases of recurring dislocation, surgical stabilisation may be recommended, followed by rehab.
