Plan Managed, Self Managed or Agency Managed: Can I See Any Physio With NDIS?
By Jacob Sciacca, APA Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, Darwin Health Group
Whether you can see any physio depends on how your NDIS plan is managed. If you are agency managed, you must use a registered NDIS provider. If you are plan managed or self managed, you can usually choose registered or unregistered providers.
Agency managed (NDIA managed)
The NDIA pays providers directly from your plan. You can only use registered NDIS providers, and they must charge within the NDIS price limits. This option involves the least paperwork for you, but your choice of provider is narrower.
Plan managed
A plan manager pays your invoices and keeps track of your budget. You can choose registered or unregistered providers, but prices still cannot exceed the NDIS price limits. Plan management is funded separately, so it does not come out of your therapy money.
Self managed
You pay providers yourself and claim the money back through the myplace portal, or pay using funds the NDIA releases to you. You have the most flexibility, but also the most admin. You must keep invoices and records.
Why choosing a registered provider still helps
Even if you are plan or self managed, a registered provider has met the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements, including audits, complaint processes and worker screening. If your plan management type changes later, you will not need to change physio.
How Darwin Health Group fits
We are a registered NDIS provider in Stuart Park, so we can see participants under all three management types. At your first visit we will confirm how your plan is managed and set up invoicing so it runs smoothly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change how my plan is managed?
Yes. You can ask the NDIA to change your plan management type. It does not usually require a full reassessment.
Does it cost more to see a registered physio?
No. Registered and unregistered providers must both charge within the NDIS price limits for NDIS funded supports.
